Super foods year in review
Highlights of popular food topics to help with aging
Super fruits
In 2006, nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich foods known as super foods were the buzz. Foods such as blueberries, salmon, soy and dark chocolate continued to make headlines. Next up? Watch for super fruits from the Amazon such as açai (ah-sah-EE), guaraná (gwar-ah-NAH) and cupuaçu (coo-poo-ah-SUE).
Red wine
Red wine is always “in,” but it’s more trendy thanks to new animal studies that point to the phytochemical benefits of resveratrol. You can buy it as a supplement, but what fun is that? If you want to drink resveratrol and you’re tired of Merlot, go for Malbecs from Argentina instead.
Flavor of the year: Pomegranate
Loaded with antioxidants, the lusty pomegranate got plenty of play this year, showing up in everything from juices and syrups to cocktails and candy. Pomegranate juice has three times more antioxidants than the same amount of green tea or red wine. Pom, the leading producer of pomegranate juice, funneled plenty of money into research and marketing.
Our Mood in Food (Kansas City Star)
2006 was a year that revolved around issues. Sure, Food Network’s perky Rachael Ray got her own daytime talk show, but to be honest, we tuned in only once. Instead, it was time to sink our teeth into several must-read books:
